Oxford Community Yoga offers private yoga therapy sessions. Jessica Lohrey is a Certified Yoga Therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapy.

Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools—postures/exercises, breathwork, meditation techniques, and more—to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs.

Many people first learn about yoga through its physical practices, but a common misconception is that it’s all about stretching or movement. Yoga therapy can help people who can’t move at all, as well as active individuals!

The yogic model of health is unique because it addresses every aspect of life rather than considering each body part or system separately. Yoga therapy is a safe way of working with the natural capacity of your body and mind to optimize well-being.

A general public yoga class can ease everyday aches, pains, and mood complaints. But a private therapeutic yoga session goes much further because it is tailored to the individual.

Yoga therapists have in-depth training to help them assess and keep their clients safe. They work with you to address your specific goals while considering any limitations you might be experiencing.

The practices Jessica recommends will vary, depending on your needs. Practices may include:

  • Movement ranging from gentle to vigorous

  • Breathing techniques

  • Meditation or visualization practices

  • Physical postures that address specific areas of discomfort or musculoskeletal imbalance

  • A combination of tools like these

"I have been taking Yoga classes from Jessica for over ten years. One of the first distinctions I noticed about Jessica’s class compared to other Yoga instructors is her deep knowledge of human anatomy – she knows which muscles groups and parts of the body are being stretched or tightened and how that affects the one’s overall balance and wellbeing. She also emphasizes the integration of mind-body through out the practice, challenging our self-awareness as we explore our limits physically, mentally and emotionally.  As part of a class of older student she gears classes to our level and yet challenges us.

But probably the reason I enjoy classes with Jessica so much is her deep knowledge, dedication, and reverence for the philosophy of Yoga. A Yoga class with Jessica is not just a great workout but an exploration of an ancient philosophy of seeing the divine in ourselves, in others, in our community, and in the world, making the world a better place one Yoga class at a time!"
